Bio:

Nathan was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of powerful business man, Harris Durham, and his wife, pediatrics nurse, Jacqueline. He was the only son in the family, having two older sisters and one younger, and as such, was expected to carry on the family name. For many years, he struggled with this, without being able to quite put a finger on why it was such a tough thing for him to fathom. He was barely thirteen when the realization came crashing down hard and fast that the issue he had with the idea of marrying a woman and having a family was that he didn’t want to be with a woman at all. Despite the protesting of his parents, Nathan ended up finally coming out when he was a sophomore in high school, and never looked back.

During his time in high school, Nathan met and became friends with a lot of other young gay people, and found that most of them felt really comfortable opening up to him, and trusted him both with information about them, and to keep them in the know about the latest issues in the gay community. He founded the first Gay-Straight Alliance at his school, with the help of a teacher whose brother had been killed in a vicious gay bashing a few years before, and discovered that he really enjoyed pouring his heart and time into the lives of people who were facing the same struggles he was.

It was with that in mind that Nathan chose his major, and he attended NYU, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work, and a Minor in Gender and Sexuality Studies. After graduating, he was hired on with a non-profit organization in the City as a social worker at an LGBT community center on Christopher Street. A couple of years later, he found himself running the community center himself. All of his coworkers said he had a wisdom beyond his years, and he worked tirelessly for the cause of not only gay rights, but for educating the gay community about everyday issues, although a few of them teased him that, for a gay man who was passionate about gay rights, he wasn’t doing a lot of practicing his own right to get his romance on with a man of his own. But that would all change in the blink of an eye...

It was while he was closing down the community center alone late one night, after helping a frightened teenager get set up to be tested for HIV that Nathan was attacked by a guy twice his size in a brutal beatdown that left him with a broken arm and a couple of broken ribs, and would’ve taken his life if not for NYPD Officer Chris Smyth, who, on his regular patrol rounds, found Nathan on the steps of the center just in time to get an ambulance there and get the injured man to a hospital.

Chris led the investigation into the assault, and worked closely with Nathan in trying to find, and subsequently prosecute the suspect, and there was something between the two of them that Nathan couldn’t deny. In all his tireless work for the gay community, he had missed out on having enough time to really find someone he could fall in love with, but Chris changed all that (with a little help from the fact that Nathan’s injuries rendered him unable to work for a while), and the pair fell head over heels in love.

After the end of the investigation and subsequent trial, Nathan and Chris started a relationship together, and have survived all the bumps along the way with a deep love and dedication to each other, and they were among the earliest couples to be married in New York after same-sex marriage was legalized.

Nathan has been back at the community center for quite some time, and still works passionately to equip and educate the younger members of the gay community.
